Chapter 5

The sound of an auger scraping against ice filled the air behind Evan as he stared hard at the tree line. He and the boys, including an injured Jasper in an Aircast, were out on a lake, ice fishing of all things. Normally he’d be game for the chance to hang out, drink beer, and shoot the shit, but there was only one place he wanted to be right now. With Lydia.

It was pathetic. The woman refused to even talk about the possibility of seeing each other after the trip, and it grated on him. Normally he wasn’t this hung up on anyone, but Lydia was different. It wasn’t just the sex—amazing as it was to watch her writhe under him as she brought him to yet another roaring climax. There was an intelligent vivacity about her—a light that seemed to burn from the inside out. He wanted to be near that, near her, yet she held him at arm’s length even as she invited him into her bed every chance they got.

So instead of soaking up the last minutes of their time together, he was ice fishing with the guys.

What the hell? He hated fishing.

“Looks like we’re good to go!” shouted Bruce as he hauled up the auger and a huge chunk of ice to expose the lake water. They’d drilled two holes, more than enough for them set up a few lines and see what they could catch for the lodge’s chef to whip up at dinner.

Evan shuffled across the snow-covered ice to his friend, and dropped down onto a bucket. The chill of the November air stung his face, but he figured that a beer or two would help ward that off. He reached for a can from the cooler sitting between him and Bruce, and popped the tab.

Bruce handed him a fishing rod, and the two of them settled down onto their stools as the rest of the guys milled around. They sat in silence until Bruce secured his rod in the snow and leaned back to stretch his legs. “I’m supposed to ask you what’s going on between you and Lydia.”

Evan shot his friend a look, but only got a shrug out of him. “Joan?”

“She wants to know.”

He shook his head. “I’d tell you if I knew, man.”

“Lydia’s shutting you down?”

“You could say that.” He paused. It felt weird confiding in Bruce. This wasn’t what he did. He wasn’t the sort of man who needed anyone else—except his sisters when they forced him under duress to disclose details of his love life. He wasn’t ready to talk about Lydia yet. The reality that he’d be losing her in a couple of days loomed too large.

“What’s her deal?” he finally asked.

His friend frowned and adjusted the fishing rod to keep his line away from Evan’s. “Joan says she’s got rotten taste in men.”

“Don’t most women say that until they meet the right guy?”

Bruce shrugged. “Me? I think she’s got crummy timing. There’s nothing wrong with the guys she dates, except they never think they're ready for anything serious.
